Traditional Yacht Documentation with 3D Scanning

Year
2025
Location
Athens, Greece

To digitally document and preserve the design, construction, and details of a traditional yacht. The project ensures accurate records for restoration, maintenance, and historical preservation while enabling modern applications such as refits, class approvals, or digital showcases.

Process

  • Survey & Scanning
    • High-resolution 3D laser scanning and drone photogrammetry performed on the yacht’s exterior and interior.
    • Capture of fine details including woodwork, deck layouts, masts, rigging points, and structural geometry.
  • Data Processing
    • Creation of an accurate 3D point cloud of the vessel.
    • Conversion into CAD-ready geometry for naval architecture and engineering purposes.
  • Modeling & Documentation
    • Development of digital 3D models of hull, superstructure, and interior arrangements.
    • Generation of technical drawings: General Arrangement (GA), lines plans, and construction details.
    • High-quality renders for visualization and owner communication.
  • Archival & Digital Twin
    • Creation of a digital twin of the yacht for long-term documentation.
    • Secure storage for use in future repairs, refits, or class compliance.

Applications & Benefits

  • Restoration Support: Accurate documentation of existing geometry for traditional boatyards and craftsmen.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Provides precise plans required for class societies and authorities.
  • Heritage Preservation: Ensures traditional yachts are digitally preserved for future generations.
  • Design Modifications: Simplifies refit design and modern equipment integration while respecting original aesthetics.
  • Owner Engagement: 3D visuals and renders offer immersive understanding for owners and stakeholders.

Deliverables

  • Complete 3D CAD model of hull, deck, and interior.
  • 2D drawings (GA, lines, sections, details).
  • Photo-realistic renders for owner presentations.
  • Digital twin stored for archival and future use.

This project format can be tailored depending on whether it’s for:

  • Private owners (heritage preservation)
  • Shipyards (refits & modifications)
  • Museums & cultural institutions (archival & research)
